I forgot yesterday to describe the clock tower on St Nicholas Church in Galway. The narration on the trolley tour pointed out to us that only three of the four sides of the tower have clock faces.
The fourth side faces towards The Claddagh. That is the area from which the Claddagh ring originated. It was also home to the poor. The blank side of the church tower was constructed that way so that the poor would not know the time of day. What an uncharitable message from a church. Ugh!
Another restriction on the poor folks, was that the men were mostly fishermen. The "powers that be" determined not to let them improve their lot. A law was passed so that the men could not take up any other occupation than fishing. Having seen the rough waters of Galway Bay it must have been a very hard and dangerous way to make a living.
The women sold the fish that they caught.
